Craniofacial deformities and syndromes are abnormal conditions of the face as well as head that are congenital and/or inherited. Such condition is caused due to improper fusing of fetal head bones during their growing period. This results in abnormal appearance of face and head. The head of such fetus fails to enlarge at the correct rate leading to small or too large head or may sometimes lead to disproportioned parts of the head. In some children this problem of craniofacial abnormality remains as a separate part and sometimes it is linked to physical ailments or deformities of other body parts.
There are several types of craniofacial syndromes and one among them is known Acrocephalosyndactyly (ACPS). Apert syndrome is one the syndromes of Acrocephalosyndactyly rarely occurring with a rate of 15.5 per 1 million births. The result is crowing of baby’s skull, fusion of digits, and eyes widening (hypertelorism). The worst thing is premature fusing of skull inhibiting the normal growth of brain and development of facial parts.
Carpenter syndrome belongs to ACPS syndrome category. In such infants, there occurs fusion of fingers in some specific places and prematurely closed sutures between the skull bones. This condition is referred as craniosynostosis. The infant head is either pointed or cone shaped.
Another craniofacial abnormality is Crouzon syndrome with an occurrence rate of 15.5 per each million births. This condition leads to widening of skull with high forehead. Such infants witness eyeball protrusion, hypertelorism, underdeveloped upper jaw, and airway obstruction resulting in delayed development.
Pfeiffer syndrome is a condition of craniofacial abnormalities that is inherited. It leads to abnormality in several soft and dental tissues. It symbolizes brachycephaly, acrocephaly, beaked nose, hypertelorism, and a high palate or cleft.
Patients with Jackson-Weiss syndrome are gifted with normal intelligence and have long living. The skull of such people is misshapen with bulged forehead. They have wide spacing of eyes and large toes. In some cases, one can notice just foot abnormalities rather than facial abnormalities.
The occurrence rate of Treacher-Collins syndrome is one out of 50,000 births causing mouth abnormalities that include big arched palate, neck related problems, and nasal cavity abnormalities. There results in jaw abnormality leading to visible dental problems. Also, there will be abnormal growth of ears and eyes. Velo-cardio-facial syndrome (VCFS) is a genetic disorder due to partial depletion of chromosome 22. Babies born with this condition have heart problems, underdeveloped or absence of thymus gland as well as facial problems.
